What to know before your visit.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions before a dermatology visit, including what to expect, how to prepare and information about insurance and payment. We’re here to make the process simple, clear and a little smoother.

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist? What should I expect at my first dermatology appointment?

Most patients do not need a referral, though requirements vary by insurance plan. Your visit will typically include a discussion of your skin concerns, skin examination and personalized treatment recommendations. If needed, procedures such as biopsies or treatments may be performed the same day or scheduled for a future visit. Contact our office for help with your insurance or to schedule an appointment. You can call us at (216) 524-4009 or email us at info@northcoastdermatology.com.

Why is it important to see a board-certified dermatologist?

Dermatologists are physicians with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions. Board certification reflects extensive education and clinical experience in dermatology, and many dermatologists pursue additional fellowship training in areas such as micrographic surgery (ie, Mohs), skin cancer and cosmetic dermatology. Seeing a dermatologist, or receiving care at a practice where dermatologists are on-site and involved in patient care every day, helps ensure that skin concerns are accurately diagnosed and treatment decisions are guided by specialized clinical training, experience and judgment.

How often should I get a skin cancer screening?

Most patients benefit from an annual skin cancer screening. Frequency depends on your skin type, personal and family history of skin cancer and degree of sun exposure. Our dermatologists will recommend a screening schedule based on your individual risk.
